Workers’ Comp for Framing & Carpentry Contractors
Workers’ Comp Insurance for Framing & Carpentry Contractors
CompShield is an independent workers’ comp agency, not tied to a single carrier, and we specialize in nothing but workers’ comp. Framing and finish carpentry are two of the most commonly misclassified codes in construction, getting that distinction right is exactly where a specialist agency earns its keep, not a generic construction quote.
Falls remain construction’s leading cause of death, and one 20-year study of union carpenters found falls from height were only 5.5% of injuries but drove over 15% of total workers’ comp costs, a clear sign of how severity, not just frequency, drives real premium.
Nail Guns Cause More Injuries Than Any Other Tool
Nail guns account for an estimated 37,000 emergency room visits a year nationally, and hospitalize more construction workers than any other tool. Apprentice carpenters are injured at over three times the rate of experienced carpenters, one study found 44% of apprentices were injured before finishing training. About 90% of nail gun injuries are struck-by incidents, and more than 70% happen during through-nailing or toe-nailing.
Overexertion, pushing, pulling, and carrying, accounts for roughly 37% of construction musculoskeletal disorders, and struck-by injuries from falling lumber and materials round out the real risk picture for this trade.

Framing and Finish Carpentry Are Different Codes
Structural framing, subfloors, roofs, and general woodwork typically fall under NCCI Class Code 5403, “Carpentry.” Residential construction up to three stories, framing, siding, and trim, often falls under 5645. Finish carpentry has its own code, 5437, which industry sources flag as one of the most frequently misclassified carpentry codes.
Getting the right code for the actual work performed, structural framing versus finish trim work, is one of the more direct ways to keep your premium tied to your real risk instead of a generic “construction” estimate.

How Much Does Workers’ Comp Cost for a Framing Contractor?
- Payroll. Your total insurable payroll, correctly split between structural framing and finish carpentry if you do both.
- Class code rate. Framing (5403 or 5645) and finish carpentry (5437) are separate classifications, misclassifying one as the other is a known audit issue.
- Uninsured subs. If invoices don’t itemize labor separately from materials, up to 100% of an uninsured sub’s payment can be added to your payroll at audit, itemizing can limit that to 50%.
We won’t publish a fake average, real numbers come from your specific payroll and classification.
